Today I (Seb) start the blog post, because this day also began again with a dive. This time I went diving with Komang. He was luckily really fit again. We went back into the house reef. Today I wanted to deal even more intensively with the small animal world and try to get some of them well on photos.
It also started right away excitingly with a nudibranch. The green tufts on its back are full of algae cells. Through their photosynthesis the snail receives additional energy – it practically always has its own little photovoltaic system with it. While it thus moves slowly over the ground, it produces additional energy with the help of sunlight.
During the course of the dive we passed many more tiny animals. There were for example fish that are only about eight millimeters long and almost transparent and live on blue, green, and orange shimmering corals. Or also black sea slugs with gray and yellow dots.
Unfortunately the swell became stronger and stronger so that it became increasingly difficult to make really sharp photos. Komang and I therefore took turns taking photos – always the one who was currently more stable in the water and thus had the steadier hand.
The most beautiful I found two Kuni's Chromodoris. Light nudibranchs with a tiger-like surface, bordered in purple and with small purple dots. I definitely wanted to photograph them in peace. So I let some air out of my dive vest to stay deep enough so that the swell wouldn't constantly push me back and forth. The photo was perfect – and I'm really proud of that.
What I'm not proud of, however, is what happened afterwards. When I wanted to swim on, I had already forgotten that I had hardly any air left in the jacket. The next wave therefore pushed me directly onto a small rock that was overgrown with not exactly friendly plants.
Since I was only wearing a shorty – so arms and legs free – the plants caught me on the left forearm and on the right thigh. Great. It burned a bit like nettles, but subsided after a few minutes and I didn't think further about it at first.
Back on land we talked briefly about the small accident, and Komang poured some vinegar over my arm as a precaution. That is supposed to prevent something from getting worse. Let's hope for the best, because my skin is unfortunately quite sensitive with such things. Komang and I then sat together until noon, viewed photos, and searched out the individual animals in identification books so that I can enter them in my dive log.
The sea and also the wind unfortunately played crazier and crazier. In the afternoon the red flag was even hoisted. Swimming in the sea was thus first of all cancelled. Lying at the pool still went quite well, though, even if the wind became stronger again and again in between and clouds pushed in front of the sun more often.
Slowly the mood of the weather also changed. The air became heavier, darker clouds moved up and at some point it started to rain more and more vigorously. I had just made myself comfortable with my book at the pool when it became clear that the day would rather be a quiet one on the veranda of our bungalow.
In the late afternoon I went to take a shower. Thereby I got quite unexpected visit, however. As a reminder: our bathroom is not completely closed. A part of the shower is open at the top, so that one can practically half shower outside under the open sky.
Last night I had already seen something on the wall at the other end when going to the toilet which I spontaneously took for a spider. So quickly look away and just don't think further about it.
When showering it then turned out, however, what was really on the way there. I had a visit from a small crab. It crawled comfortably through the stone bed that frames the shower and apparently stopped right under the water jet, as if it were treating itself to a little shower. Fresh water seems to be quite pleasant for crabs too, then.
So I stood under the shower, watched this little guy, and thought to myself only: Welcome to Bali. Here one just shares everything with nature – even the bathroom.
In the evening we finally decided to eat instant noodles once more and make ourselves comfortable with a movie in the bungalow. Outside it was raining so hard meanwhile that we didn't have much desire anymore to walk once more to the restaurant.
So it remained with noodles, movie, and the calming sound of rain.
Until tomorrow.
