Today we planned to take the tram up to Victoria Peak.
We wanted to see Hong Kong from above. But when we saw the crowds in front of the ticket office, we decided to go to Hong Kong Park instead and just walk around between the skyscrapers. What surprised us was that people were sitting on the ground between the buildings everywhere. It looked like they were all waiting for something. After walking several blocks and still seeing people sitting around everywhere, we wanted to know what was going on.
We asked a security guard, two police officers, and a lady at the tourist information before we really understood and believed what we were told. In Hong Kong, May 1st is also a holiday. Since all the offices are closed, people simply sit on the street in front of the offices with cardboard and other materials, meeting friends there for a chat. Different cultures, different customs.
For the rest of the day, we wandered through the city and ended up at an ice cream parlor, where we treated ourselves to an overpriced soft serve ice cream.
